Do people not argue about who takes the lead and who follows? (Just a note for future reference.)

They argued. Then they stopped. The space from the bed to the ceiling was barely a meter high for both of them. Shelves stood at the foot of the bed, with a small light; each had carved out a personal little nook there, and neither wanted to change anything anymore.

I would say the older person should be on top, and the younger one on the bottom, for safety.

Both beds are on the upper level.
